Unprecedented Backlog in Citizenship Applications |

More than 460,000 permanent residents filed for citizenship during the month of July 2007 alone, a nearly 650 per cent increase over the number filed during the same month in 2006.
Nearly 1.4 million citizenship applications were filed in fiscal year 2007. The surge means that the waiting time from filing to interview has increased from an average of seven months to 18 months for petitions filed after June 2007.
