Instant Citizenship Available for Certain J-1 Physicians! Print E-mail
Monday, 02 March 2009
Although it sounds almost too good to be true, the United States Army is offering immediate citizenship to J-1 physicians who have been in the United States legally for two years and who is licensed to practice medicine in the United States either by enlisting in the U.S. Army  for three years in "active" duty or six years in the "Selected" Reserve.   The desired medical specialties needed by the Active Army include Internal Medicine, Psychiatrist, General Dentists and Oral Surgeon.  The Army Reserve desires to recruit many other medical specialties.  (see FAQs).  Immediately upon enlistment, the physician may apply for American citizenship.  No waiver or green card needed.  This benefit applies to doctors and nurses and these categories of health care professionals must specifically enlist as such.  Benefits of instant citizenship to enlistees also applies to persons with language specialties in many languages.  However language enlistees must enlist for four years on "active" duty and must have been in a legal non-immigrant or special status at least two years as well.  Persons fluent in 35 languages are eligible, if other requirements are met.  Languages include Hindi, Pushtu, Chinese, Korean, Punjabi, Nepalese, Korena, Urdu, and Persian.

This program, known as MAVNI, will end on December 31, 2009 or when 1000 qualified non-citizens have been recruited, whichever comes first.

The FAQs were prepared by our good friend and colleague, Lt. Colonel Margaret Stock, a professor at West Point.   Pederson Immigration Law Group will hold a Web Seminar for interested persons in the near future and hope to have Lt. Colonel Stock as an invited guest to present the fine details of the program.
